First Sergeant Stephen R. Metzger

First Sergeant Stephen R. Metzger was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1986. He graduated from Kiski Area High School in 2005 and enlisted into the United States Marine Corps in May of 2006. 1stSgt Metzger attended boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina and graduated from Third Recruit Training Battalion in August of 2006.


Upon completion of the MAGTF Planning Specialist Course, he was assigned to I Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF), Camp Pendleton, California where he served as a MAGTF Planner in support of I MEF Operations during Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) from November 2006 through September 2009.


In September 2009, Corporal Metzger was assigned to US Marine Corps Forces South, Miami, Florida where he supported multiple Combined and Joint Force Exercises and Operations in South America and the Caribbean Islands to include a deployment from January through March 2010 with Joint Task
Force Haiti (JTF-H) to Port Au Prince, Haiti in response to the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that devastated the country. Corporal Metzger was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in March 2011.


In April 2011, Sergeant Metzger conducted a lateral move and was transferred to Marine Detachment Fort Belvoir, Virginia and attended Tactical Imagery Analyst Course (TIAC) to be trained as a
Geographic Intelligence Analyst. Upon completion of TIAC, Sergeant Metzger transferred to 2d Intelligence Battalion, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and was quickly assigned to 2d MHG and deployed from November 2012 to November 2013 to the Republic of Georgia in Support of the Georgian Deployment Program and Helmand Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as an Intelligence Chief with Georgian Liaison Team Rotation 9. Sergeant Metzger was promoted to the
rank of Staff Sergeant in February 2015.


In January of 2016, after selection and graduation of Recruiting School, Staff Sergeant Metzger started his special duty assignment as a Canvassing Recruiter at Recruiting Station Harrisburg, in Harrisburg, PA where he was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant in November 2018. After sucessful completion of recruiting duty, Gunnery Sergeant Metzger was transferred to a joint forces command assignment.


In March of 2019, Gunnery Sergeant Metzger transferred to United States Central Command (CENTCOM), aboard MacDill AFB in Tampa, Florida and became a Collection Requirements Branch
Manager in the J26. During his time at CENTCOM, Gunnery Sergeant Metzger served as a Deputy Senior Watch Officer for the J2 during heightened tensions in the region during the US forces withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.


In July of 2022, Gunnery Sergeant Metzger transferred to 3d Radio Battalion aboard Marine Corps Base Hawaii and served as the Company Gunnery Sergeant shortly before being selected to lead a
detachment to Okinawa in support of Operational Liaison Team - Japan.


After selection to the rank of 1stSgt, 1stSgt Metzger transferred to Combat Logistics Company 33, Combat Logistics Regiment 37, 3d Marine Logistics Group in January of 2024. 1stSgt Metzger’s personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal (Gold Star in lieu of second award),
Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (Gold star in lieu of third award)
