Lance Cpl. Matthew Chant adjusts his M50 gas mask Jan. 11, 2019 at Camp Kinser, Okinawa, Japan. Marines trained in reconnaissance, surveillance and decontamination (RS&D) are required to take a refresher course every fiscal quarter to ensure they are capable of performing RS&D tasks operationally. The M50 gas mask gives Marines the ability to breathe in areas exposed to chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) agents. Chant, a native of San Mateo, California, is a ground electronics telecommunications and information technology systems maintainer with Communications Company, Combat Logistics Regiment Logistics 37, 3rd Marine Logistics Group.
