Biography

 

 

A native of Staten Island, New York, Colonel Bowen enlisted in the Marine Corps in September 1972 and attended Recruit Training in Parris Island, South Carolina. 

His enlisted assignments include Engineer Equipment Operator, 2nd Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division; Platoon Sergeant, 3D Shore Party Battalion, Okinawa, Japan; NCOIC, Recruiting Sub-Station, Brooklyn New York; and SNCOIC, Engineer Equipment Platoon, 1st Landing Support Battalion, Camp Pendleton.  While on recruiting duty he achieved the rank of Meritorious GySgt.

Colonel Bowen was appointed to Warrant Officer in 1985, Chief Warrant Officer in 1987, First Lieutenant, Limited Duty Officer (LDO) in 1988, and he redesignated as an unrestricted line officer in January 1991.

His assignments in the Fleet Marine Force include Heavy Equipment Platoon Commander, 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion; Engineer Platoon Commander, 11th Marines; Company Commander, 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, Inspector-Instructor, Bridge Company B, 6th Engineer Support Battalion; Operations Officer, Marine Wing Support Squadron 274 and Group Operations Officer, Marine Wing Support Group 27; Battalion commander, 9th Engineer Support Battalion; Assistant Chief of Staff G-3 and G-4, 1st Marine Logistics group; and Assistant Chief of Staff C-7, I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward)/Regional Command Southwest, Afghanistan.

Other assignments include Engineer Officer, Marine Corps Tactical Systems Support Activity, Camp Pendleton; Readiness Section Head, Plans, Polices and Operations (PP&O) Headquarters Marine Corps; Deputy Chief, Counter- IED Task Force, U. S. Central Command (USCENTCOM); Chief, Combating Terrorism Division, USCENTCOM; Senior LNO to Multi-National Forces-Iraq, and Chief of Operations (J3), Joint Operations Center, USCENTCOM.

Colonel Bowen’s past combat assignments include Operation DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM; Operation RESTORE HOPE, Somalia, Africa; Operation IRAQI FREEDOM; and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM 10 and 12.

Colonel Bowen’s military education includes The Basic School, Marine Corps Engineer School, Amphibious Warfare School Nonresident, Advance Logistics Officer Course, Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and the Air War College. 

His civilian education includes a Bachelor of Science in Management from Linfield College, McMinnville Oregon, Master of Military Studies from the Marine Corps University, and Master of Strategic Studies from the Air University. 

Colonel Bowen’s personal decorations include The Bronze Star Medal; Defense Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars; Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars; and the Combat Action Ribbon.
