HMCM (FMF/SW/AW) Leonardo E. Carbonel

Command Senior Enlisted Leader, 3d Dental Battalion Okinawa, Japan

Master Chief Carbonel was born in the Philippines. He began his naval career on November 1997 at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, Illinois followed by Hospital Corpsman "A" School. He then received orders to report to Camp Pendleton, California for Field Medical Service School and graduated in September 1998.

After graduation, Master Chief Carbonel transferred to 3rd Medical Battalion Okinawa, Japan. And in October 1999, he received orders to report to 9th Communication Battalion, 1st Surveillance, Reconnaissance, and Intelligence Group in Camp Pendleton, California. During his tour, he was advanced to Petty Officer Third Class and earned his Enlisted Fleet Marine Force Warfare designator.

Master Chief Carbonel was then selected for Preventive Medicine Tech "C" School and graduated with honors and distinction; he then received orders back to 3rd Medical Battalion Okinawa, Japan. During his tour, he deployed to Shinkiari, Pakistan for a Humanitarian and Disaster Relief missions in November 2005. Upon his return, he was promoted to HM1 and was assigned to the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit as the Health Service Support Platoon Leading Petty Officer and Preventive Medicine Technician. He then earned his Aviation Warfare designator, selected as 31st MEU Sailor of the Year, and was advanced to the rank of Chief Petty Officer in 2008.

In December 2008, Master Chief Carbonel reported to Naval Medical Center Bethesda, Maryland and held numerous leadership positions to include Command Fitness Leader. During his tour, he was one of the driving force during the $1.4 Billion BRAC project for two medical centers and three community hospitals. He was later selected to the rank of Senior Chief in 2012.

In June 2012, Master Chief Carbonel reported to the USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN-76) as the Medical Department Leading Chief Petty Officer. During his tour, he completed a Docking Planned Incremental Availability; Planned Incremental Availability, and the Rim of the Pacific exercises. He earned his Surface Warfare designator and qualified as Afloat Training Specialist. He then led his department during the unprecedented three-carrier hull swap between the USS RONALD REAGAN, USS GEORGE WASHINGTON and the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT.

In September 2015, Master Chief Carbonel reported to the Navy Environmental and Preventive Medicine Unit Five as the Senior Enlisted Leader and was later selected to the rank of Master Chief.

Master Chief Carbonel is a graduate of the Senior Enlisted Academy, Class 196 (Green). He is currently assigned as the Command Master Chief to 3rd Dental Battalion 3rd MLG and U.S. Naval Dental Center Okinawa, Japan. He holds a Bachelor of Health Science degree with a concentration in Environmental Science. His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (5 awards), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and various service and campaign awards.
